A,B,C,D Little Star

Why, oh why am I always the last to know everything?

It only took me 33 years to figure out that "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "The ABC Song" were THE SAME FREAKING SONG.

I figured it out while singing it to Gabby and I fuh-reaked out. HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS BEFORE TODAY?

I bet everyone in the world already knew that and once again, no one bothered to tell me.

Like Andrew said after I FINALLY decided I better tell him that the word was "figure" not "Thigger" because, well, it was so damn cute, but totally NOT cute when he turned 11..."Thanks for making me look schtupid all of these years."

Is there anything else you people are holding from me that you'd like to fess up and tell me?

For all I know, Mr and Mrs Huxtable weren't really married and we're really "just actors."

Yeah, right. Like THAT could even be true.

I won't tell you how long i thought it was "I don't have a famous idea" instead of "a faintest idea."

Yeah.

Well, I just thiggered out that when my mom would call her friends early in the morning, she wasn't saying "Are you up and ADAM" but, rather, "are you up and at 'em?"

Hm, well, I used to be rather fond of salt when I was younger until my sister told me it made your chin big and that's why Jay Leno looked the way he did. I didn't know this wasn't true until a friend of mine told me I was an idiot about three months ago. I also had no idea that pamphlet wasn't pronounced "pamplet". I still have a hard time saying it like "pamflet". Hahaha.

There's another song with that same tune, too: Baa-baa black sheep.

Baa, baa black sheep
Have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir
Three bags full.

One for my master
One for his dame
One for the little girl
Who lives down the lane

Baa, baa black sheep
Have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir
Three bags full.

Hahahah Y, you're not the only one that didn't correlate all that together either. I never knew until I just read your entry! Anyhow have a great weekend girlie.

Posted by: Kristina at May 22, 2005 06:27 AM

huh. i never realized that about the songs either.

and my boyfriend? he though alias was pronounced "uh-lie-us". and this lasted until after he graduated COLLEGE!

I just want you to know that I dreamed about that damn song last night. Thanks. And I was like "hey, it sounds just like the ABCs."

Posted by: Sarcastic Journalist at May 22, 2005 07:28 AM

My fiancé, all 28 and 3/4 years of him, still pronounces it "fustrated". He can spell it perfectly, but he just leaves the "r" out when he says it. I don't bother correcting him. Oh, and also? I always thought it was ADAM, too. I had it perfectly thiggered out-- Adam was the first man to wake up in the whole world, right? So asking if someone was awake that way was comparing them to Adam, who also woke up.
Oh, my four-year-old-raised-in-a-religious-home logic. Anyway, I only realized it wasn't Adam when I read it in a book like, two years ago.

Your daddy isn't your real daddy.

I am.

I didn't know that either.

Chocolate really is made from ground up bull penises...

I had one of those "I should have known that" moments yesterday, but I took advantage of the Mommy Brain and promptly forgot what it was.

Therefore, it never happened.

Don't feel badly... I'm 39 and had no idea until I read your post!!

Posted by: Lisa at May 22, 2005 05:05 PM

*count me in* I had no idea it was the same tune, either. I used to spell the font "verdana" - VERANDA, like the porch. And I always wondered why it never showed up right! And remember that site, Realm of Redheads (http://www.realmofredhead.com)? I thought it was "Real Mofo Heads" for YEARS.

Y, you also need to know that if you sing the Theme Song from Gilligan's Island to the tune of Amazing Grace (and vice versa), the words and tune line up perfectly.

Juuuusst siiiiiiit riiiiiiight baaaaaack and hear the taaaaale....

There's a reason every time I see this commercial I almost fall off the couch from laughing. It is so me!

"Steely Dan is not one person. We get fringe benefits, not French benefits. It's not the Leaning Tower of Pizza, and James Dean was an actor — Jimmy Dean makes sausages."

Posted by: robyn at May 23, 2005 02:36 AM

I was going to type what Louise typed - just about every time I hear the word "frustrated" by ADULTS they are pronouncing it "fustrated" without the 'r'.

Another one is "for all intensive/intents and purposes"....

And the one I personally screwed up throughout young adulthood was "six OR one half dozen of the other"....always thought it was "six AND a half dozen of the other".

Posted by: Vickie at May 23, 2005 02:36 AM

I have to admit I only learned the ABC song/Twinkle Twinkle Little Star/Baa Baa Black Sheep connection by watching Sesame Street with my son. Prairie Dawn sings a lovely version called the Alpha-BaaBaa-Twinkle Song, where they combine all the lyrics.
Now I can't hear any of those three songs without wanting to mix up all the words.

Oh, and Vickie: my mother-in-law always says "Half of one, six dozen of the other." Ha!

Stairway to Heaven also...

And that James Dean / Jimmy Dean thing is gonna bug me today.

Posted by: ben at May 23, 2005 06:46 AM

Learn something new everyday. Just sat here and sang both songs to myself out loud with three kids staring at me like I'm a moron just so I could see if you were indeed right. And you are. lol

Posted by: Michelle at May 23, 2005 09:42 AM

Dude, lately when I sing twinkle twinkle to Piper, I've been somehow slipping the alice in wonderland version in there,
"like a *teapot* in the sky" is what the tea-drunk mouse says in the movie....

About Y
My name is Y, but you can call me "Jesse's girl." I am an Aerobic Dancer and have mastered many moves, but the one I am the most proud of is "The Monkey." I have three kids. ALL FROM THE SAME DAD (Because, did you know someone actually asked me that question?) A 15 year old son, a 11 year old son and a 4 year old daughter who was not planned but who is loved more than words could ever express. I am addicted to Starbucks, reality TV and to getting really good deals through coupons and "club member" savings (Please, respect The Costco Card.) I am extremely competive and if you don't believe me, just ask my husband about the time I sold him out to win a game of Taboo. If you're waiting for the part where I speak of my love for walks on the beach or slow dancing in the rain, you're going to be disappointed because my idea of a good time usually involves things like "burping contests" and "doing The Worm".
