I don't blame you if you want to break up with me now.

Dear Internet,

I used to collect Beanie Babies.

And when I say "collect" I mean I'd spend an entire day going from one hallmark store to the other trying to "score" the "good ones" and by "good ones" I mean "the bears".

"Well, don't be ashamed, you were young!"

No, Internet, I was like, in my late 20's and I would say I was "collecting them for my kids" which was funny because a) they never aksed me to collect them b) they would cry when I'd say we were going shopping for beanie babies. c) they pretty much hated them.

I stopped collecting them a couple years ago, but that didn't stop me from crying when a rat chewed through one of the big bags I had some of my favorite "large sized" bears in and tore them to shreds.

My addiction was so bad, that I actually befriended the cashiers at the Hallmark by my house, and they would CALL MY HOUSE when a new shipment arrived and ask me which ones I wanted so they could put them aside for me. And then, I'd walk into the store like some kind of gangster and give "the look" because NO ONE IN THE STORE COULD KNOW ABOUT OUR SECRET OPERATION!

I still have storage box after storage box full of these things and sometimes? I secretly think that I can make lots and lots of money if I try to sell them on ebay because "HELLO! I HAVE PRINCESS DI! And PEACE BEAR!"

I feel good about the fact I was never One of Those Women who would knock children down to grab the one they wanted, but I feel ashamed that I COLLECTED BEANIE BABIES IN MY LATE TWENTIES.

People tried to help. My sister would say stuff like "That's just stupid. You could be saving for a house with all of that money!"

I should have listened to her because I don't have a house, but I sure do have boxes full of really cute beanie babies that me nor my children will never use!

It feels good to get that out and come clean with The Internet.

If you are willing to part with them, definitely eBay them. There are still a bunch of collectors out there who want them, especially the rarer ones. Who knows, maybe you can save up enough money for a house... or at least pretty new things to redecorate your house with!

I took time off of work to go around town to all the different hallmarks for those blasted beanie babies. I have the princess di and erin and a whole bunch of others that were supposedly very collectible. .

I thought I was the only one! lol

Posted by: laurie at July 15, 2005 08:34 AM

Oh, I forgot to mention that I spent my entire paycheck on beanie babies once!

How embarassing.

Posted by: laurie at July 15, 2005 08:36 AM

it's not too late! that's what ebay is for :)

Posted by: geeky at July 15, 2005 09:00 AM

I *STILL* collect the bears. My bedroom looks like the Beanie Factory exploded.

I have three huge tubbies filled with miscellaneous beanies. I sold a lot of like 30 of them on eBay two years ago, and I may just sell my Buddies just to get more space in my apartment!

The first step is to acknowledge you have a problem. Just kidding. Dave Ramsey calls that stupid tax. We all have to pay it. We all do it. Beanie babys. Disney items you name it.
I agree craiglist them or ebay those suckers. You might have a home sooner than you think.

Posted by: Tammy at July 15, 2005 09:14 AM

This should make you feel better: Emily's father, who will be 40 on July 24, collects beanie babies.

Posted by: Shylah at July 15, 2005 10:11 AM

Well, I hate to admit this? But? I'm tempted to start again. Because I saw some of the news ones and man, are they cute.

But IT WOULD BE FOR GABBY!

No way, I can't go there again. I just can't.

And you make fun of me for watching The View? Woman.

Posted by: Sarcastic Journalist at July 15, 2005 10:37 AM

see... I'd sell mine on eBay...? but then... I'd have to sell them.

Posted by: shy me at July 15, 2005 10:42 AM

We used to buy them, too, and my son wanted to play with them and insisted on taking the tags off and I almost had a nervous breakdown until I realized how stupid I was.

Posted by: tammy at July 15, 2005 11:08 AM

When I was 16 my mom gave all of my My Little Pony stuff to my younger cousins...I cried for 2 days and wouldn't speak to her. I'm now 27 and just told my mom 2 weeks ago when I was home visiting..."I wish you would have kept those for me, I could have used them to decorate the computer room." Yeah, I'm not normal and not to proud to admit it.

I have 3 huge plastic storage containers in my closet stuffed with Beanies. My hubby keeps trying to get me to part with them, but I'm not sure if I'm ready yet. Confession time...I just bought a Beanie last week...it was Patrick from Spongebob...have you seen the Spongebob Beanie Babies? Too cute! Makes me want to start up again.

Posted by: Kellerbell at July 15, 2005 11:27 AM

You inspire me. How come it seems all the stupid things you have done are funny and all the stupid things I have done are just stupid? I'm jealous.

Posted by: oxie at July 15, 2005 11:37 AM

Shit. I collected them too.

Now I feel better.

Uhhhh, Hi my name is Kristi and I am a habitual Barbie Doll collector. Yup you got that right. I have five huge christmas storage containers, those big plastic ones, filled full of barbies that my grandmother collected, my mother and her sisters, I myself when I was a child and a few that I still collect today. I have one of the first barbies ever made and she is perfect. Never been played with in the original wrapping. I know I know, I have a Barbie problem.

I'm not alone!

And Tammy reminds me...

I BOUGHT TAG PROTECTORS, PEOPLE.

Posted by: Y at July 15, 2005 12:50 PM

Oh my god. I can't stop laughing. Tag protectors. Hahahahahhaha. You crack me up. That was a very well written post Y. Good for you. I love this story.

I used to be a beanie collector too. I even had Garcia. I was one of those people who stood in line at McDonalds for hours to get four happy meals with the teenie beanies. Luckily, my husband and I sold all of them (even Garcia and the Princess Di bear) on ebay. I took that money and spent it all on my cool Disney collection. Yep, I went from one addiction to another and I am now an obsessed Disney collector.

This remined me that I have a huge box of those little shitheads in my mother's basement... I kinda got excited thinking I could make a little money on them...

thats funny because i was just going through all of my stuff today, getting ready to move and wondered what i should do with the beanie babies that people gave me. no, i didnt want them, nor did i intentionally collect them, they were just handed to me, and a collection was started. and today i thought, do people still collect these? what if i had a garage sale? or sold them on ebay? would anybody want them?

but sorry, i dont have any of the "bears." apparently my gift givers were just too cheap to buy the good ones.

Posted by: katie at July 15, 2005 04:16 PM

I don't know if they have a 12 step program for beanie babies addicts. Maybe you should start one up. Sell the damn things on E-Bay!

Posted by: Tammy/averagemom at July 16, 2005 10:17 AM

Hi, I found you from fickenchingers blog (angie). I just wanted to let you know how much you made me laugh while reading your blog!! A WHOLE BUNCH!! I needed it too! Thanks.

Well... Look at it this way everyone has "bones" in the closet, but you, you have beanie babies.

I happen to run across you page. I'll be back to visit. Stop by.

Posted by: AyoSarai at July 18, 2005 12:04 AM

I have the Princess Di bear and the Peace bear. You are not alone. Dude, we are going to be soooooooo rich one of these days, thanks to those bears. With the tag protectors, that our favorite Hallmark store was willing to stash and hold for us.

(What the HELL were we thinking? Oh yeah. That the bears are cute.)

About Y
My name is Y, but you can call me "Jesse's girl." I am an Aerobic Dancer and have mastered many moves, but the one I am the most proud of is "The Monkey." I have three kids. ALL FROM THE SAME DAD (Because, did you know someone actually asked me that question?) A 15 year old son, a 10 year old son and a 3 girl who was not planned but who is loved more than words could ever express. I am addicted to Starbucks, reality TV and to getting really good deals through coupons and "club member" savings (Please, respect The Costco Card.) I am extremely competive and if you don't believe me, just ask my husband about the time I sold him out to win a game of Taboo. If you're waiting for the part where I speak of my love for walks on the beach or slow dancing in the rain, you're going to be disappointed because my idea of a good time usually involves things like "burping contests" and "doing The Worm".
