Fourty Two.

My husband had a hard life. If you knew the details of his childhood, you would probably want to hug him and you might even cry a little.

My babies daddyYou’d never know the rejection and hurt he’s endured over the years because he turned out to be such a selfless, thoughtful, good man.

A man who loves his children deeply and has sacrificed a great deal so they can have the happy childhood that he didn't have.

I always try to acknowledge his birthday in some way, because I want him to know that even though his biological mother AND father both abandoned him, I love him deeply and am so fucking glad that he was born.

Ever since Gabby was born so close to his birthday, his Big Day has come and gone without notice. And he’s fine with it, because he’s an adult and not one to cry about petty things like “no one called me or gave me a present on my birthday.”

But, this year, I wanted to do a little something special for him, just because he sacrifices so much for his family every day of every year, that I just wanted to celebrate his birthday and let him know that “hey, we care about you and you are loved!”

I asked friends, but people are busy with their own parties, lives, previous plans.

And it makes me want to cry (ok, I did cry) but I completely understand. People have lives, they have other friends, that's just life.

But, I decided that I’m not going to toss his birthday to the side another year and I’m going to take him out for a nice dinner and maybe a movie and a blow job on the way home. (Provided bulging disks cooperate.)

He deserves at least that.

I feel a little silly asking this, but if you wouldn’t mind taking a minute and saying something nice to PigHunter on his special day, I would appreciate it. (He gets a kick out of your comments, seriously, you people make him laugh.)

Happy Birthday, Tony. I’m so glad you were born and I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me ride the Tony Boloney Pony for the past 17 years.

P.S.

Guess who shares a birthday with PigHunter?

Thirty. Oh, how I wish.

Happy birthday Tony!!!!!

OK first I cried a little (because I'm super-sensitive like that) and then I spit on my monitor over your last line. You never fail to get in that jab that takes me back from the brink and I'd like to thank you for that. That said, I think it's awesome that you'd ask people to acknowledge Pighunter on his birthday - you're a great wife.

Happy Birthday, Tony. I hope today is the first day in a year full of great things for you and your family. (This is where I should make some crude comment but can't seem to muster one up. I'm sure there will be some from others though. ;) Enjoy.)

I, too was all emo reading through this, all full of appreciation and affirmation for what you were saying, and then I got to the end and laughed out loud. So loudly, in fact, that I startled people in my office and caused someone to spill coffee.

I'm pretty sure he feels loved. Happy birthday, Tony!!

Dear Tony,
I can feel the kind spirit of your wife as I read her blog, and I have no doubt that you share the same kindness of spirit. I find it so uplifting to read about the love that you share. Take it from someone who is in a lonely, bad relationship and has been very unlucky in love--you both are so lucky to have found each other and to have such a close and caring family. Never take it for granted, and happy birthday to you!

Happy Birthday Tony! Its amazing how wonderful you are to Y, and what a great Daddy you are- we love hearing ya'll's stories (adn when I say "we" , I mean, me, my friends/family/random others that I repeat the stories to as though you're my neighbor not on the opposite coast).

Don't you wish they had Chuck E Cheese for grownups and that people would still come to our parties and give us stuff we want but feel stupid buying for ourselves? Maybe we should invent something like that....

Anyway, round here, people won't come over unless you've got wine/beer/something and don't care about puke in your house. Well, we know a couple of folks that like freaky couples, but we're not like that, so we hide at home when they have parties.

Why did I share all that? Oh yeah, to let you know you're not alone and we hope you have a great great wonderful b-day. If you're ever on the East Coast, give us a holler.

Just de-lurking to say happy b-day to Y's husband. A good man is hard to find and it looks like you hit the jackpot, Y!

Mucho affectionato!

Angeleigh, your friendly stalker:)

Posted by: angileigh at August 8, 2007 09:35 PM

happy birthday, tony! from what i've read about you here, you are a great man who deserves to be celebrated. the specific instances when Y quotes you, or tells us stories about you speak to that, for sure (the 'i love you this hard' post comes to mind), but it's also amazing to think of you as the man behind a woman as funny, and witty, and insightful, and caring as Y shows herself to be in every post she writes here. even if she never quoted you at all, we would know that you are awesome simply because you have the good sense to stay close to her.

i hope you enjoyed your day!
(and hopefully the bulging discs copperated...)

Posted by: tiffany at August 8, 2007 09:49 PM

Tony. I am SO DOWN for you you and Y to come play poker in my backyard. Belated b-days in the flooded hiz-ouse!

You don't look a day over 25.

Posted by: Lena at August 8, 2007 10:50 PM

WE *heart* you TONY!!! Happy B-day, may that bj be the best bj you've gotten in years!!!

Posted by: DOMESTIC DIVA at August 8, 2007 10:54 PM

Hi Tony!

I wish you the best birthday ever! You remind me of my father not the looks just his childhood. ;)
He too had a rough one...and also came out being the best dad I could ever wish for.

Thanks for being an awesome husband to Y (trust me, we hear the stories: the good, the bad, the ugly) and thanks for being the greatest dad to your kids. It's men like you...that we need more of in this world.

Happy Birthday!

Posted by: pookie at August 8, 2007 11:36 PM

Happy Birthday Tony!! I'm glad you are blessed to have your loving wife and children with you on your special day :)

42 *is* the perfect number, after all--it's the answer to Life, the Universe & Everything ;)

I hope you have a very Happy Birthday, Tony!

Happy Birthday Tony! May the coming year be your best yet!

I truly wished your family lived next to mine. I think we'd all get along smashingly!

Posted by: Lisa at August 9, 2007 12:51 AM

Happy birthday Tony! I don't often comment on Y's blog, but for you, I'll make an exception. The way she writes about you is with such love and tenderness. You're clearly a doting dad, a loving husband and all kinds of good stuff. Y's lucky to have you (you're lucky to have her, too, of course) - have a really wonderful birthday.

Posted by: Rebecca at August 9, 2007 03:17 AM

Happy B-day Tony!!! Any guy who puts a bag of frozen peas on his ballsack is allright by me.

Big and Rich have a song called "Save a horse, ride a cowboy". I, too, have a Tony. My husband. And I sing the words "Save a pony, ride my Tony" every time instead.

Happy B-Day Tony!

Posted by: KimberlyDi at August 9, 2007 05:09 AM

Hoping he has the BEST birthday!!!!

Posted by: Heather at August 9, 2007 05:14 AM

Happy Birthday!!

Posted by: Pam at August 9, 2007 05:31 AM

I would sing a Happy Birthday song except I'm sure your husband values his ear drums. I would do a little dance for him except I'm rhythmically-challenged and, um, a little clumsy. I'd give him a gift except I'm broke because college is kicking my ass financially. I would bake a cake except, well, I'm not sure how it would look after being stuffed into a FedEx envelope.

So, um, here is my cheesy internetz HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TONY! Thank you for loving Y and producing beautiful children and being a good man. I think your family is proof that you've done something right in this life! Enjoy your birthday and surround yourself with the people who love you!

Posted by: steen at August 9, 2007 05:43 AM

Tony, a great man like you should be celebrated every day, but especially on his birthday. I hope you and Y had a great dinner and "dessert" on the way home. You deserve it! Happy birthday man!

Posted by: Suz at August 9, 2007 06:19 AM

Tony, you remind me so much of my husband! Despite your upbringings you have become amazing, strong, compassionate, loving men! Happy Birthday! Thank you for being such an incredible husband to Miss Y there! I hope you have loads of fun on your birthday! Drink up! Enjoy the obligatory birthday sex! Wonder at your amazing kids! And feel great! Happy birthday!!!!

Posted by: Christina at August 9, 2007 06:25 AM

Comming out of lurkdom to say.....

Hell yeah to the blow job on his birthday! Every man should have a birthday bj, it should be like in a rule book or something!

Happy birthday Tony! Enjoy your dinner, movie and BJ!

Posted by: Heatherg at August 9, 2007 07:00 AM

THANKS ALOT Y!

My husband's birthday is tomorrow and now that he's read this, he's gonna expect a blowjob! Or... 31 blowjobs, because "aren't you supposed to give 31 blowjobs for my 31st birthday?"

AND WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO SAY I DON'T EVEN HAVE ANYTHING BULGING TO USE AS AN EXCUSE!

Tony! Happy belated birthday!

Posted by: Louise at August 9, 2007 07:27 AM

Happy Birthday Mr. Y! lol

From reading here for years, I can tell how much you adore and care for your family. It's sad how rare that is.

In my best Marilyn Monroe impression:

Happy Birthday to you...
Happy Birthday to you...
Happy Birthday Mr. Pighunter!
Happy Birthday to you!

And many more!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TONY! YOU RULE :D

Posted by: Becca at August 9, 2007 07:39 AM

A day late and a dollar short, of course. Hope your birthday was fabulous and that the bulging disc of Y cooperated.

Posted by: Heather at August 9, 2007 07:44 AM

Damn, sorry I'm late Tony, but let's just call it birthweek (that's what I'm doing) and I'll be on time. I'm happy to share, kinda, my birthday (I'm on the 7th, so depending on what time you were born, we could be less than 24 hours...and a year, apart) with such a cool guy. It's so obvious from Y's stories about you that you're awesome.

My birthday dinner from Vallarta restaurant was a jumbo bowl of menudo (w/ cilantro, lime & onions), a margarita, chips & salsa, and sopapillas. It was fabulous. I hope that your birthday was just as tasty.

Posted by: FlippyO at August 9, 2007 08:04 AM

Happy Birthday, Tony, from Canada!

See, now you have two countries celebrating with you!

About Y
My name is Y, but you can call me "Jesse's girl." I am an Aerobic Dancer and have mastered many moves, but the one I am the most proud of is "The Monkey." I have three kids. ALL FROM THE SAME DAD (Because, did you know someone actually asked me that question?) A 15 year old son, a 11 year old son and a 4 year old daughter who was not planned but who is loved more than words could ever express. I am addicted to Starbucks, reality TV and to getting really good deals through coupons and "club member" savings (Please, respect The Costco Card.) I am extremely competive and if you don't believe me, just ask my husband about the time I sold him out to win a game of Taboo. If you're waiting for the part where I speak of my love for walks on the beach or slow dancing in the rain, you're going to be disappointed because my idea of a good time usually involves things like "burping contests" and "doing The Worm".
